Quick review of Safari 4

safari-iconMuch to my surprise of having missed it, Apple released Safari 4 Beta to the people.

Quickly installed it, checked it. Let me summarize:

Cover Flow + Apple TV wall in a browser? That’s a FAIL.

Also the 200 MB memory consumption (at least on Windows) should not go unnoticed. Ah, and one more thing… say you patched the UXTheme.dll on XP so that you can use 3rd party themes. And you use another theme… Well the browser is made to only blend and work with XP’s default themes. Try it… has interesting effects. So another FAIL.

Dear Mr. President, …

Every day President Barack Obama is handed a special purple folder. The folder contains ten letters, and every day President Obama takes time to read them.

Are they from world leaders? From members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Members of the intelligence community?

No, these letters have been culled from the thousands the White House Correspondence Office receives each day from Americans who have taken the time to sit down and write to their president.

Homunculus Project

In ancient times, the holy-grail of alchemy was the creation of a Homunculus – a servant or lifeform, artifically created – man-made life. Now, scientists believe we’ll create life within the next ten years.

shadowofmemoriesfx4
Homunculus, a shadowy, mysterious figure with supernatural powers – one core character in the game “Shadow Of Memories”. At one stage he says: “I am Homunculus… not that there’s much in the name.”

I don’t know if I should be excited or freaked about this article.

“It’s going to be a big deal and everybody’s going to know about it,” said Mark Bedau, chief operating officer of ProtoLife of Venice, Italy, one of those in the race. “We’re talking about a technology that could change our world in pretty fundamental ways — in fact, in ways that are impossible to predict.”

FAIL #8 – but this time, it’s O2

No photo this time. But a real-life satire, which is a true fail. So what I didn’t blog about is that my iPhone 3G did, in fact, break. Long story short: I was at my sister’s door, tried to call her to open it (it’s an apartment complex, the buzzer doesn’t work). And it was raining. So I used the phone, she opened. Now like 2 days later, a friend called me, and I couldn’t hear him. He could hear me, but I couldn’t hear him. So I went through everything – restore, even the 2-hour-killswitch-wipe to ensure it’s not a software thing.

Conclusion: the earpiece was in fact dead, however everything else worked – like the OS, multitouch, music, everything.

That means that there is a hardware fault. I was not sure what caused it – but now I know, it was in fact, the rain that day. Why do I know this? I’m getting to that.

So I went to the O2 store here where I originally purchased the device on release day, July 11, 2008. They said they’d have to send it away. Fair enough. They’d come back to me as soon as they have something. Also fair enough.

Now this morning, the guy calls me and informs me that there is in fact water damage in the device – this would not be covered by warranty, I would NOT get a new device or replacement, or reimbursement. I explained my case and told him that I would unable to control the weather around me, it was raining. He said that I would also not use my laptop in the rain. There is a slight problem with the statement… although both are mobile devices, their intended use is not entirely the same as such. Anyways, he said I’d be free to come to the store to discuss this further. Which, of course, I will do.

Here’s the thing: iPhone 3G is the only device in the entire mobile phone market that does not withstand rain. And I specifically refer to the 3G only, because the original iPhone passed the test. Which test? The FRC test in Switzerland. Don’t believe me?

Huma Khamis, chief tester at FRC, told Swisster that for each model of phone, several items were bought in different countries and tested to ensure that their performance was not down to a particular batch or a one-off dud. The iPhone 3G systematically failed the rain test, even though the previous version had passed it.

Interesting. Now, also there is this thing called “Implied warranty of Merchantability”, which is internationally valid and outlines that a device sold by any manufacturer is fit for it’s intended use. If this is not the case, then you are entitled for a replacement.

Merchantability
An implied warranty of merchantability is a warranty implied by law that goods are reasonably fit for the general purpose for which they are sold.

International sales law
In international sales law, merchantability forms part of the ordinary purpose of the goods. According to Article 35(2)(a) of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, a seller must provide goods fit for their ordinary purpose.

Source: Wikipedia, Implied Warranty

Okay, so we now have established that we obviously deal with a design flaw here, which affects all iPhone 3G’s in the world. And I do believe that 4 seconds of rain is within ordinary use – I did not put it into a washing machine or something.

BUT – they also sell something which is called iPhone insurance. For some extra money you get additional extra services which cover certain things on top of the normal warranty, say theft or these things. Or accidents.

You see the thing is, I have this insurance. And the terms state:

What’s covered?

* Theft
* Loss
* Accidental Damage (including water damage)
* Worldwide cover – including free international delivery
* Guaranteed new replacement
* Accessory cover up to £200

Source: O2 iPhone Insurance

I see. Interesting.

I in fact SHOULD print this out AND PRESENT YOU WITH YOUR OWN DAMN TERMS.

FAIL!!!

Can someone tell me why I didn’t use Kubuntu before?

Right, so I have been playing around with Kubuntu, my new main desktop system, for like 2 days. There has been a bit of trickery and tweakery going on, like for example you have to tell ALSA that you are on a MacBook Pro Revision 3 in order to make the headphone jack work. Well I like to fiddle around with stuff, and I think I finally got my setup working and start to feel comfortable.

Here are just a few screens of the built-in functionality of Ubuntu – this is not Compiz – but it works just like it (I don’t necessarily need the Cube to be honest). There are some features I have grown attached to – I am so glad they are not missing. Others however are from Mac OS X. Like this one in my first screenshot.

Cover Flow
Why has Cover Flow not been implemented as task switcher in OS X?

Spaces
You can obviously have more than 4, but 4 Spaces kinda do the trick for me.

It's an Apple thing
They call it Expose… thanks for porting that too.

Stay iTuned
Stay iTuned. On Windows, Linux, Mac.

Thing was with iTunes that I copied the entire collection of mine to an external drive as it was, then installed WINE and iTunes 8.0.2 – and then copied my collection over to my Music folder in /home, as it was, and BOOM! iTunes recognized all of it, including settings, ratings, and does even support Genius. I was genuinely surprised… WINE really has come a long way. And yes, iTunes wobbles just like the other windows do. Bujaka!

Ubuntu’ed

This is the end, my only friend: me, the Mac die-hard, no longer uses Mac OS X. LOLWUT? Yeah, it’s true. After having closely followed the development on the open road for a while, I have seen that there are in fact superior applications out there. For free. I always had an eye on Ubuntu, I think it’s one of the best Linuxes around (what’s the plural of Linux? Linii? Linae? Linuxes?).

After having seen the programs listed on the page for Mac switchers, I came to the conclusion that it is time at last, to adopt Tux full-time. So I backed up all my data to another drive, and started installing Kubuntu, as I don’t really like GNOME which ships with Ubuntu. 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is the version I got obviously.

Plasma is the new black
The default appearance of KDE 4′s Plasma, its new desktop engine

Install was smooth, no issues whatsoever. BUT: there is a problem when it comes to booting an Intel iMac which no longer has Mac OS X installed. You see the Mac Bootloader is ‘blessed’ during the install of Apple’s system, which means it is certified and readable by EFI – which is the equivalent to the BIOS in all Macintoshes. However, most of the time an Ubuntu is not installed on a Mac – and this proposes an interesting problem.

The machine will not boot when it doesn’t have a blessed bootloader on either the MBR of the drive, or on one of the partitions. That results in a big folder icon with a question mark, telling you it has nothing to work with. However if you boot with the Kubuntu CD, and choose ‘Boot from first hard drive’, it will work.

Obviously I don’t wanna boot with the CD all the time, so what’s there to do? Well I remembered this tool called ‘rEFIt’ for OS X, which lets you boot as many systems as you want on a Mac. So I checked if there is something like this available for Ubuntu, and of course, there is – in the Universe tree.

So what you have to do if you want to use a Mac without OS X and Ubuntu instead, is this:

1) Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu (or Edubuntu, or Xubuntu) – whatever you are fancy

2) Use the entire drive, wipe OS X

3) After the install, re-insert the CD and choose ‘boot from first hard drive’ in the boot menu

4) Log in, open a web browser, and go here:

rEFIt for Intrepid Ibex 8.10
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/i386/refit/download – and choose a location near you.
This will download a .deb file at the location you choose.

5) Open a file browser, navigate to the .deb file, open it – the package installer will come up and you will have to enter your administrative password

6) Once installed, open a terminal and enter this command:

#> sudo /sbin/gptsync /dev/sda

It will also ask you for your administrative password. Also, it will tell you that the bootloader needs to be updated – CONFIRM THIS!! Your non-Apple bootloader is now in fact ‘blessed’ and will let the Mac ‘see’ the install in EFI.

7) Reboot and remove the CD. The machine will boot normally at this stage

I write this down so that if anyone ever runs into this, here is the solution. Note that this is for the 32-bit version – there is no rEFIt tool for Ubuntu in 64-bit yet!!!

Now you can go ahead and install anything you like or want. Compiz for example and so on. Or proprietary drivers (helps for Compiz =D).

Kinda cool eh?

Madlax: The Elda Taluta shirt

Since I have been pretty much blown away by the show Madlax, I’ll have a custom t-shirt made tomorrow morning in the city centre. It will be the only one of its kind with this particular image. If you want one too, I can have it made. Comment here and we’ll get in touch if you like.

This is what is gonna be on the front. When it’s done, I’ll post photos.

Elda Taluta.
Madlax on the left – Margaret Burton on the right. These are also the images used for both Madlax soundtrack albums

There are three holy books in the show:

- Firstari contains the Words of Awakening – “Elda Taluta”
- Secondari contains the Words of True Nature – “Sarkus Sark”
- Thirstari contains the Words of the Truth – “Ark Arkus”

This is where “Elda Taluta” comes from =)

London Calling

Haven’t posted in a while. Damn. Well, time for something new, right now! =D Since I have been off for a while, and not doing much (does playing EVE count as doing something?), I decided that I gonna pay London a visit. I have never been there, so I booked a flight and off I went. Tomorrow’s my flight back.

I have seen quite a lot on my first day here, enough to actually make me sleep for a straight 10 hours. And at last, since this was a little wish I had since I was a kid, I have seen Big Ben. Live and in full high-definition. Great feeling. Also I took a ride on the London Eye (Millennium Wheel). Great view man. I was REALLY lucky with the weather on Sunday… let me put it this way: The doves and seagulls there are very tame – they eat out of your hand! Don’t believe me? Get yourself there, buy a waffle from a stand close to the London Eye – it’s true.

All in all I had a very good time here, I like the city a lot. I’ll come again some time.

So I think I gonna post some of my favorite shots from here.

And last but not least, I encountered a LOLcat in a souvenir store today – which I – of course – had to caption appropriately.

I’ll be back in the UK – some day for sure.
