Search the web… and save the planet

I know what you’re thinking. Whatever there was in my food, it was strange. I can relate, I’d think the same thing. Fact is the last thing I’ve eaten is a Whopper. And it didn’t taste strange.

So what is this post about? Well. I don’t remember exactly how I stumbled upon this, but it is very intriguing. There is this new start-up called Forestle. And what they have in mind is in fact a very noble idea.

They keep track of the number of searches performed, and then donate money to save the rain forests. 0.1 m/2 with every search query performed.

Google in Green
Search for something… save the world – one query at a time

In their own words, the model of their business works like this:

All of our income (minus about 10% administrative costs) is donated to the adopt an acre program, which is run by The Nature Conservancy – one of the most renowned environmental protection organizations in the world. They use the money, which is generated by Forestle, for the sustainable protection of the most precious rainforests on our planet.

So far, if the statistics on their page are in fact true, then almost 1,000,000 m/2 of rain forest have been saved. That’s quite a substantial area of land… let’s keep saving our home, okay?

I wonder if you can add this in Firefox and make it the default. If their index is not enough, you can still use the page but see Google results. Now that’s smart.

I think I gonna test them, and save the planet – one search at a time.
