Dude, where’s my (virtual) money?

Compared to other MMORPG’s out there, EVE Online is not necessarily a walk in the park. Like in the real world, money (unfortunately) is power. In this case we are talking about ISK, InterStellar Kredit. This is the currency you need in order to acquire, well, pretty much anything. Weapons, minerals, items, equipment, skills, ships, and everything else there is. Now there are a few ways to get your hands on the almighty ISK… there are safe and legal ways, and some not so safe ways but still within the game’s rules, and there are other methods.

The safest ways are: Mission running. You accept a mission from an agent in a station available to you, you complete it, get the reward. If you do this for a substantial amount of time you can get quite a steady income – but it gets boring after a while. Then there’s mining. You take a ship that’s specialized to mine minerals or a ship with a reasonable cargo hold and which can fit mining lasers. This is probably the safest but also the most boring way.

Not so safe ways are shooting pirates in less secure space, take the bounty on their head and the stuff from their ship (where is Spike and the Bebop when you need him?!). Keep in mind that mostly experienced players are out there in the low security areas – if you’re not good enough they will take you down and enrich themselves. As you might have guessed you could go down the pirate route too – but then also be ready to be hated by most and being shot at with no remorse and with little to no care who you are.

The DNA of power
The DNA of power: healthy, infinite amounts of money – in this case ISK

Then, a while ago, people came up with the idea of running an in-game bank. There had been many ventures like this before in the game, but they didn’t last very long and most of which were scamming schemes. Not quite so with EVE Online Bank – or EBank. This bank was founded with the people in mind, and was meant to work as a real bank. And since it doesn’t cost very much to open a corporation in EVE, they did it. However – if you open a corporation, it is highly advisable to have your business plan ready – cause people wanna know what you’re up to – ESPECIALLY with a bank. But – they had one, and it actually sounded legitimate.

People put in their money and trusted the bank. They had interest rates, so over time their money would grow. In time, their customer base got very large – and thus the money involved. The bank had several hundred billion ISK in their virtual safe, a very substantial amount of money which is only matched by the daily trade volume in the most massive trade hub in the game, the Jita system. With this kind of money in your vault, you sure have a very large responsibility.

Once upon a time
Once upon a time, there was a bank. And it was good. Times however, change

But then, a player named Ridcic hat some fancy ideas. He managed to slip some of the bank’s – and customer’s!! – money into his own personal account. And I’m not talking about pocket money here. He managed to magically re-route a whopping 250 billion ISK into his pocket. But instead of doing something with the money in-game (which is still sorta unbelievable, but within the game’s rules), he had some even fancier ideas about how to go with the money he just had in his wallet.

To put that into perspective, the most massive and powerful ships you could ever buy in-game are so-called Titan class ships. There are four classes of them, one for each race. And thus each one has its own advantages and weaknesses. Each of those ships is about 15km long. Thing is, not only does it take an eternity to be able to fly these doomsday machines, it also is kinda spendy. One of those alone is believed to have an estimated total cost of over 60-70 billion ISK, and takes about a real-time month to build.

To redeem the pure.

Casting his sight on his realm, the Lord witnessed
The cascade of evil, the torrents of war.
Burning with wrath, He stepped
down from the Heavens
To judge the unworthy,
To redeem the pure.

-The Scriptures, Revelation Verses 2:12

That’s what they say about the Avatar, a Amarr Titan pictured above.

So this man beams 250 billion into his pocket, and then gets the ideas of selling the ISK for real money in the real world. Now THAT is in fact against the rules and is illegal. But what does he want to do with the money? Well pay the mortgage on his house. Wait, what?!

It has now emerged that Ricdic used the cash to put down a deposit on a house and to pay medical bills.

“I’m not proud of it at all, that’s why I didn’t brag about it,” Ricdic told Reuters. “But you know, if I had to do it again, I probably would’ve chosen the same path based on the same situation.”

Now thanks to his actions, EBank is now in spiral to the end. They have filed for something that could equal as Chapter 11 Bankruptcy – and are in re-organization mode. The bank has made a statement regarding its status, and that all further transactions will be frozen with a few exceptions.

When asked how long it might take until normal service resumes, Ray McCormack commented: “we’re aiming for a year.” The magnitude of the task ahead can be seen in the bank’s financial statement, which reports their assets to be worth an estimated 884 billion ISK, while its liabilities exceed 1.9 trillion ISK. The reasons for the largest losses in ISK have been revealed in the statement as:

* 250 billion ISK – Embezzled by Ricdic
* 275 billion ISK – Default on loan arranged by Ricdic
* 75 billion ISK – EBANK Salaries
* 36 billion ISK – Share Default Freelancers Inc. Research Division
* 35.9 billion ISK – Loan Default

This is the biggest scandal and robbery EVE has ever seen.

So what’s the point of me writing of all this? Don’t trust banks.

Manage the money yourself. Regardless of ISK or Euro or Dollar.

Key Of The Twilight, performed Live

I just want to post this video I found just now. It’s the (in)famous Anime music composer Yuki Kajiura, performing the song “Key Of The Twilight” live. The song is from the Anime .hack//SIGN and is meant for Tsukasa, the main hero of the show. It is a very awesome performance, especially the guy who plays the violin. I’m truly amazed. I so have to see her playing live some day.

The World’s a game – .hack//SIGN

It is the present day. The Internet is integral part to a lot of people’s lives. Also, it is the core component to some games out there, subscription-based. One of those games is “The World”, a Massive Multiplayer Roleplaying Game, much like World Of Warcraft. Roughly 30 million people are logged in at any one time, enjoying themselves, have a good time. The game is played with a sort of Virtual Reality thing you put on your head, in conjunction with a Dreamcast-like controller.

Not so however for a player with the name Tsukasa. He finds himself waking up in a dungeon with a treasure chest, but has no recollection as to how he got there or what happened prior to waking up. As he is to find out, to make things worse, he is actually unable to log out of the game. He has now been stuck for 10 consecutive days on the game’s servers – wandering the places, puzzled by what happened. He seems to be what is referred to as a “Wavemaster” – a character with the highest skillset available to the game. In his case however, he seems to have the ability to change game mechanics as he sees fit.

The Cast of .hack//SIGN
The core cast of the show, from left to right: Crim, Sora, Silver Knight, Lady Subaru, B.T., Bear, Mimiru and Tsukasa

The show I’m talking about is called .hack//SIGN (pronounced ‘dot hack sign’), and actually is the second series in the franchise of the .hack project and is the first of two, as far as I know. The successor is called .hack//ROOTS. The .hack// shows are set from within the actual game and shows the interaction between the characters and the development of the story.

During the course of the show, Tsukasa gets and makes new friends… he is skeptical at first as he has trouble understanding his own situation. However Tsukasa eventually opens up and accepts the people around him. Together they embark on a quest to find out what actually happened to him, and why. A mysterious item crosses their way, named The Key Of The Twilight. The game has been running for years and apparently this item is nothing more than a myth – or is it? Who knows. It is however believed this item might have some answers for the question as to what happened to Tsukasa and why he is unable to log out. To add spice to the soup, it is learned that Tsukasa is playing the game – BUT not in front of a computer.

The show is produced by Bee Train (the makers of Madlax!) and was originally released and aired back in 2002. As most animes, each episode has an approximate runtime of about 25 minutes. People have had mixed opinions about the English dubbing of the show – I believe it was very well done. The people who think it isn’t well done, basically say using the voice of Bruce Willis for a John McClane anime would not be right. Anyways – the English voices were very well done indeed again.

Loading a different World
For Mac + PC. You’ll need a pretty high-end graphics-card though.

Beside the interesting story, I found the concept behind it very interesting. The show explores the interactions and relationships between characters in a game, and people in the real world, and the effect it has on people. It shows how such a game can create very great positive moments in one’s life, moments you will never forget – regardless if it was a game or not. In the end those people have been there, pulled through until the end – and that made them more than they were before. They have had an experience they will never forget and made new friends. Think about that when you consider the equivalents to that in the real world – like World Of Warcraft, GuildWars, or EVE Online. People actually make friends in there and things happen in those games. And regardless of your perception – to them, it is very real and they will remember that. And that, ultimately, is what makes these games a great thing.

All in all a very awesome anime show, another one not to be missed. Life’s a game sometimes.

Tacos in space

Wait what? That’s pretty much the same thought that I had when I saw this. I took a break from EVE but got back into it over the last few days.

So there I am, trying to get somewhere in the game. And what do I see? An array of cargo containers floating in space, in a very creative way… But see for yourself.

This is the end, my only friend: The Pirate Bay is closing

The page is one of the greatest pioneers in the BitTorrent movement and has withstood many trials and tests over the years. With the invention of one of the greatest protocols of all time, The Pirate Bay eventually came to life.

Yarr!
Pirates won’t stop at radio like it was done in the 60’s. The Pirate Bay will be remembered for what it was

But like everything in this world, everything comes to an end. ThePirateBay.org will be given to new owners, and this pretty much marks the end of what was one of the biggest strongholds on the web.

In just a few days The Pirate Bay will be passed onto its new owners, marking the end of an era but not the end of BitTorrent. The nostalgic torrenters among us might want to download a copy of the site for archival purposes. It never hurts to have a backup of important data in place, especially when it’s free.

Download a copy of the Pirate Bay before it’s gone

Some of you may want a copy of the entire BitTorrent domain. With just under 900,000 torrents hosted there, the entire database weighs in at about 22 Gigabyte. So if you want a piece of the Pirate Bay, you better get it now as long as it’s there. Mount Sharemore will not be gone, but the Pirate Bay is off the map.

I respect the people who were able to keep it up for so long. You’ll find a job quickly, I’m sure about it.

Quick follow up to the LSTable element

In file browsing what do you want? Icons. This is why I extended my element to display the right type of icon beside the entry of the list.

The table element now has a special column on the left. This column is fixed in width and does not participate in resizing operations.

If you require this icon column, you just post a message that it is required – and column index 0 will be used for it.

[myTable setHasIconColumn: YES];

That’s all you have to do. I won’t go into much details now, but… how cool is that? Maybe the GNUstep engineers want to know how it is done =D

I know I know, enough already with Stand Alone Complex! Haha! I just wanted to share this real cool wallpaper with you, I had found on DeviantArt.
