Captain’s Log…

State of the ‘step
Feb 26th
Just a very brief update on my project. Right now I’m working on Milestone Build 1A115, which is the first one to provide a graphical login service. From there you can click on your user, enter password, and you’re in – the usual. As with most systems out there, even on Mac, LoginWindow.app can never ever terminate. If that happens, well, your desktop and everything in it and on it crashes with the service.
That way my Desktop can connect to the login manager and give the instruction to log the user out. LoginWindow.app therefore effectively links the most vital components – which is why 1A115 is a milestone build. As some developers might want to develop widgets (Cosmoids) that allow you to log out with one click, the API to connect to LoginWindow is obviously open to anyone to implement.
In case you were wondering about my versioning… First is the version of the system, in this case 1. The letter that follows describes what it is. A = Alpha – B = Beta – F = Final. A in this case. The last digits are a steadily increasing number. The higher the version, the more improved the code is.

If Farmville were a country…
Feb 24th
“Farmville boasts 118 million total installs. It has more monthly active users than the population of France.”
“Zynga’s top title, FarmVille, is played by an estimated 75 million people each month — roughly equal to the number who have played the classic arcade and desktop game Tetris during its entire existence.”
CNN: The Facebook games that millions love (and hate)
In the comments, one person says it best:
Tomoyo – No plot. No characters. No prizes. I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. It’s like throwing time right into the trash can.
At this point, may I make some suggestions as to what real games are please:
Ice Ice Baby

Sometimes, when you travel through space, you find these little gold mines. I found one yesterday. In EVE, blue ice is amongst the most valuable raw ores as it is used to fuel player owned stations (or POS) for the most part. In the outer rims of space it isn’t so hard to come by – but you can always get shot. At this place however, which is in a protected area, shooting you is not that easy.
What I saw made me open my mouth wide and long. I have never EVER seen so many Hulks, Covetors, Retrievers, even Orcas (the super uber mining ship), and other transporters, in one place. Also, note the yellow diamond-shaped things floating around the rocks… They are all giant containers, minimum distance between them is 5 kilometers.

Located in the Genesis region, it is what is left of what once was the most massive natural phenomena mankind ever witnessed. When it collapsed a long long time ago, it severed the human colonies on New Eden’s end from Earth, which lead to the evolution of the four races that populate the cluster today.
A truly impressive sight, and since I got back into the game, I just had to see it.
Well hello there my latest friend!

…the person who came up with this thought:
I believe the incident at Haiti was caused by a Tectonic Weapon
Author: Brian D. Hill
I know I am probably going to get grilled over this but I have decided not to stay silent because I am concerned for the people at Haiti and whats at stake with the new world order. God Bless the people at Haiti and they never deserved any of it whether our government caused the earthquakes or not.
So now that I got that out of my chest I will now speak about what I think happened to Haiti. I believe our military used a tectonic weapon such as a sound bouncing cannon (or the HAARP program), tectonic penetration missiles, or used another technological method to cause the multiple earthquakes at Haiti.

Welcome to Roanapur City: Black Lagoon
Feb 13th
We are somewhere in the early 90s. Okajima Rokuro is a normal, everyday business man, but one day he is asked to deliver a confidential disk to eastern China. However the boat is hijacked by a band of mercenaries, and the CD is stolen. Okajima is then taken hostage for a ransom. While Okajima tries to negotiate for his life, he is being told about the dark secrets his employer was really involved in, and that they have taken all the necessary steps for everyone to believe he is dead. He is now stuck with people who call themselves the Black Lagoon Trading Company, which are based in the fictional city of Roanapur in Thailand. The ship he is stuck on, is the Black Lagoon.

The core characters of the show, starting from top, clockwise: Benny, Dutch, Revy, Rock
With all people in Japan believing him to be dead, Okajima decides to join the crew. It is then when he is given his new name Rock. He is no big gunman or fighter, but has excellent translation and negotiation skills, which the rest of the crew believe could come in handy at some stage. Also, the crew seems to have a particularly friendly relationship with the Russian crime syndicate Hotel Moscow. The ship and the company is lead by a man only known as Dutch. His background or past remains a mystery, although it is safe to assume that he has served the military in some point in the past.
Revy is a somewhat troubled woman, events of her past made her who she is today. Quite skilled with guns, she is the main female lead. Never short of a sarcastic comment and extremely dangerous, she seems to be a very broken girl inside. Rock learns of this, but Revy seems to be reluctant.

Whatcha gonna do?
Benny is the tech guy in the show who has hacking and computing skills, therefore able to acquire information otherwise not obtainable. Like Rock, he is not so great with guns – but his technological and mechanical skills are quite valuable to Dutch.
The show has 24 episodes altogether and is divided in two seasons, where the second season is titled “Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage”. While the first 12 episodes concentrate on the crew and what they do for a living, The second 12 concentrate more on character development. Many references to authors, philosophers, and interestingly Quentin Tarantino films can be found. In one episode for example there is a poster titled “The Wild Punch”, which is a reference to Tarantino’s “The Wild Bunch”.
The show encompasses many of the known girls-with-guns elements – for example maids and nuns with guns. However the way they come together make it an interesting mix.
All in all, it is a pretty outstanding show – if you don’t mind graphic violence that is. Some conversations between Rock and Revy bear a deeper meaning, with the topics of existence, reason for being, and human perception of things. If you are looking for good but not brainless entertainment, action, not afraid of the violence, surprises, nuns with guns, torpedo boats, blowing up bars, super sexy Revy, and a non-shooting negotiator, then this is the next anime for you.
